Follow two creeks to the waterfalls
Anna Ruby Falls is operated by FIND Outdoors with the U.S. Forest Service. Curtis Creek and York Creek create adjacent falls; the principal paved approach follows Smith Creek from the visitor-center area toward viewing decks. At approximately 0.4 miles each way, it is short in distance but includes steep sections.
The operator’s current FAQ excludes wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility-assistance devices from that principal trail. The Lion’s Eye Trail offers a shorter alternative near the center with a cable handrail and braille interpretation. Choose the route for the visitor’s actual needs, rather than relying on the word paved as an accessibility promise.
The current schedule is nine to six, with last ticket sale at five. Thanksgiving, December 24 and December 25 are closures. Admission is separate from Unicoi’s ParkPass, even though the approach passes through that park area. Weather and maintenance remain relevant to trail access.
Read the valley through a house and its working buildings
Hardman Farm State Historic Site, in Sautee Nacoochee, preserves an 1870 house built for Captain James Nichols and later associated with Governor Lamartine Hardman. Guided visits introduce furnishings and domestic technology; dairy buildings add the history of a commercial farm operating in the early twentieth century.
The Nacoochee Mound nearby represents an older Indigenous burial landscape. It requires historical context and respect, without turning a romantic legend into an established fact. The accessible one-mile Helen to Hardman Heritage Trail provides a separate riverside walk along the Chattahoochee.
House tours and grounds access have different schedules. Thursday–Saturday house visits should be selected deliberately, while seasonal grounds admission and the dawn-to-dusk trail allow other ways to approach the site.
Enter a managed conservation landscape
Smithgall Woods State Park preserves forest and the Dukes Creek watershed on land formerly changed by hydraulic gold mining. Register at the visitor center, use its interpretation and select a walking route with staff information.
Day-use trout fishing requires a reservation and is limited to Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday from October through May. Scheduled hunts affect some hiking access; Laurel Ridge remains a designated safety-zone route.
