Chase County Courthouse is the architectural anchor. Completed in 1873 to a design by John G. Haskell, its French Renaissance character is expressed through a distinctive red mansard roof and locally quarried limestone. Inside, a walnut spiral staircase links three stories. The building remains in government use, which gives the visit a particular immediacy: public administration continues within a structure that has become a heritage landmark.
Self-guided access is offered on weekdays during normal business hours, with government holidays excepted. Brochures are available in the foyer and at the chamber of commerce. Weekend visits and organized group tours need advance arrangements through the chamber. This is worth settling before arrival if the interior is central to the trip; a view of the roof from the street and access to the historic rooms are different experiences.
One block north, Chase County Historical Society & Museum fills in the human record. Its two limestone buildings contain objects, photographs and documents connected with ranching, farming, schools and domestic life. An exhibit on Knute Rockne links the county with the 1931 plane crash near Bazaar that killed the Notre Dame coach and seven others. The museum also preserves research material, making it relevant to visitors tracing family histories as well as those seeking a general introduction. Admission is free, with regular opening Tuesday through Saturday.
Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve lies north of neighboring Strong City. Begin with the visitor center’s short film and exhibits, then choose a route around the historic ranch buildings or into the prairie. More than forty miles of trails offer very different levels of commitment. Bottomland Trail is described by the National Park Service as wheelchair-friendly except when wet, while other paths can include rough ground and difficult crossings. Ask about conditions rather than assuming that a short route is automatically an easy one.
For 2026, the official tour information makes scenic van service conditional on funding. A vehicle excursion should therefore be confirmed directly, and private vehicles are not permitted on the preserve’s trail network. Winter brings another distinction: the visitor center closes Monday and Tuesday from November through March, while other facilities follow separate schedules. Bison live in parts of the preserve, but observation is a possibility, not a promised encounter. Together, courthouse, museum and prairie give Cottonwood Falls depth without requiring the visitor to compress it into a fixed itinerary.
