Read the village through its ironworks
West Point Foundry Preserve is the most direct introduction to local industrial history. Trails pass remains of a site that made machinery, locomotives, pipes and artillery. Interpretation helps explain what the ruins once did, while the recovered woodland makes the transformation of the landscape visible. It is a substantial walk with a story, not simply a green space between other stops.
Access from the station area makes the preserve particularly useful for a visit by train. The official brochure distinguishes lightly graded and steeper routes, so choose the walk rather than assume every part has the same demands. The manager’s audiovisual material can add context; headphones are recommended. Access to outdoor remains should not be confused with a guaranteed interior tour of the surviving building.
Give Boscobel its own transfer and reservation
Boscobel is in Garrison, outside the village. Its gardens and views across Constitution Marsh toward the Hudson and West Point are reasons to visit alongside the house itself. The architecture also tells a preservation story: fragments of the original early-nineteenth-century building were saved and reassembled at a new location.
The house is currently being restored after a ceiling collapse and subsequent emergency work. Its present Insider tours should be understood as visits during that process, with the available experience described by the institution. Grounds admission and a guided house ticket are different choices. Arrange a transfer from Cold Spring: Boscobel specifically advises against walking the Route 9D approach because of fast traffic and limited sidewalks.
Choose a currently open Highlands route
Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve comprises separate parcels and many trails. In 2026, the Breakneck Ridge access and adjacent station remain affected by the two-year closure that began in April 2025. The connector-and-bridge project points toward 2027. A guide should not turn that closed approach into a suggested starting point.
The project’s alternative-hike information identifies Bull Hill, Cornish Estate and Little Stony Point among the choices near Cold Spring. They involve different effort, and some approaches lack continuous sidewalks. Use the official map and current closure information to select one suitable route. Combine that outing with the foundry and Boscobel according to interest, transport and weather, leaving enough time for the village and riverfront themselves.
