Choose the train journey, then its coach
Blue Ridge Scenic Railway leaves from 241 Depot Street. Its two-hour express follows the river corridor without a town layover; the four-hour extended ride includes two hours in McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee. Pick the longer journey when exploring those towns matters alongside the train itself.
An open-air coach offers bench seating facing broad windows. Closed cars provide air conditioning, while adults-only Premier Coach 105 adds reclining seats, drinks and a catered small meal on four-hour rides. Accessible Coach 405 has a lift and adapted restroom but must be booked by telephone. These differences can determine comfort more than the excursion’s generic name.
The 2026 autumn schedule runs September 19–November 3. Winter journeys are announced from November 5 through February 28, 2027; confirm an actual departure rather than assuming daily service. Arrive forty-five minutes before the booked time.

Mercier Orchards was founded in 1943 and now identifies itself as a fourth-generation family operation. Its market, bakery and cider activities sit alongside seasonal fruit picking. A farm visit can therefore remain worthwhile without a promise of entering the fields.
The current apple notice lists Gold Rush Crimson and Arkansas Black. Picking hours differ from the market’s hours, with admission bought on site while fruit remains. Weather can suspend picking and tractor rides; scenic tractor tours are generally an alternative when ripe fruit is unavailable. Decide using the operator’s current notice, not a photograph of a previous season’s harvest.
Give the lake its own outing
Morganton Point Recreation Area is at 475 Lake Drive in Morganton. FIND Outdoors operates it with the Forest Service, providing a designated swimming area, picnic facilities and seasonal kayak or paddleboard rentals through The Point. Day visitors use parking near the beach and picnic grounds; overnight campsite reservations are separate.
The area opens year-round with reduced services from November to early April. Tourism information identifies accessible parking, a Mobi Mat and an accessible pavilion; ask about current equipment for the access you need. Let weather, operating season and the chosen activity shape the route, without forcing these three experiences into a fixed number of travel days.
