A visit to Salamanca's cathedrals leaves travellers on Plaza de Anaya, among golden stone, monumental doorways and the practical question of lunch. There is no need for a car or a long search: Rúa Mayor links this quarter to Plaza Mayor through a centre made for walking. The tourist office uses precisely this axis in its routes. Reaching the area is easy; the real choice is between eating inside the great Baroque setting and stepping aside to put more emphasis on the cooking.
Plaza Mayor, built in the eighteenth century, remains the city's gathering place as well as a monument. Beneath its arcades, Las Tapas de Gonzalo has a bar, dining room and terrace. Its menu combines croquettes, local Morucha beef and contemporary dishes, allowing either a brief stop or a full meal. The view can also cost time: some customer accounts describe a warm welcome, while others mention delays and prices worth checking before ordering. Anyone with a timed visit later that day should ask how long the kitchen expects to take.
On Calle Prior, just outside the square, Bambú Tapas y Brasas offers a different scene. Fire and the counter anchor a menu of tapas, half portions and sharing dishes. Its Michelin Bib Gourmand recognises the relationship between cooking quality and value; it is not a Michelin star. Truffled duck egg, croquettes and charcoal-grilled meats help explain why this is the stop for someone who wants lunch to be a culinary event rather than simply a central seat. Service begins at one in the afternoon, and the restaurant closes on Mondays and Tuesdays.
For budgeting, remember that a tapa, a sharing plate and a main course are not the same purchase. In either restaurant, check portions and prices before getting carried away by an appealing list of dishes. Afterwards, Plaza Mayor again provides a clear landmark: continue under its arcades, return towards the cathedrals along Rúa Mayor or head into the shopping streets to the north. That ease of continuing on foot is part of the answer: a good meal here need not interrupt a day of sightseeing.
If the food is the priority, Bambú offers tapas and charcoal cooking just off the square; if eating beneath the arcades matters more, Las Tapas de Gonzalo puts the table within the landmark itself. Compare menus, timing and budget before sitting down.
