Dahlem feels different from Berlin’s central neighbourhoods: the city describes it as an area of villas, parks and museums, home to Freie Universität, research centres and embassies. Activity is most visible during the day, when students move across campus; at night the residential district slows down. You do not need to travel into the centre for sushi, but it helps to distinguish two offers: Bamboo original asiatische Küche is a restaurant with a sushi menu, while Mensa Shokudō is a Japanese-inspired university cafeteria, not a specialist sushi counter.
Bamboo serves nigiri, rolls, sashimi, combinations and hot dishes. Its menu publishes prices for selected sets and bowls, which helps estimate an informal lunch; curries, wok dishes and Vietnamese plates also accommodate groups with different preferences. Public comments often mention friendly attention, a comfortable room and reasonable prices for some orders. However, official pages disagree about whether it closes on Mondays, so confirm the schedule directly.
Shokudō, operated by studierendenWERK Berlin, works differently: self-service, weekday hours, a changing menu and different prices for students, staff and guests. The official plan checked included futo maki that day, but it is not guaranteed every day. Reviews praise the campus location, value of some dishes and Japanese cooking; others note crowds and the guest payment process. It makes sense for a budget-conscious lunch paired with a campus visit, not for dinner or a wide selection of raw sushi.
The U3 serves both locations, and the area can be combined with museums, Domäne Dahlem or the Botanical Garden depending on the day’s route. Bamboo lists ordering and an easy-to-check Ladenbergstraße address; Shokudō publishes a weekly menu, allergens and guest prices. We found no evidence of exclusive parking at either site. Choose Bamboo for a restaurant meal and call to confirm it is open; if price and a rotating offer matter more, check Shokudō’s menu before setting out.

Bamboo original asiatische Küche
Ladenbergstraße 4, 14195 Berlin, Germany
Dahlem is not a nightlife neighbourhood or a strip of restaurants to browse without a plan. Berlin’s borough portal presents it as an area of villas, parks, museums, embassies and scientific institutions, with the Free University a familiar daytime presence. Bamboo is on Ladenbergstraße, near campus and the U3 corridor; it works as a neighbourhood meal for residents, students and museum visitors, rather than a destination for high-end Japanese dining. The Freie Universität (Thielplatz) station makes it accessible by underground.
À la carte sushi, nigiri, rolls, sashimi and set menus, alongside curries, wok dishes and bowls. The official page lists a Sake Set at €12.50, Alaska Roll at €6.90 and lunch bowls from €9.90, checked 2026-10-21.
Mensa FU I Shokudō
Van’t-Hoff-Straße 6, 14195 Berlin, Germany
In Dahlem, Japanese food is also part of the university landscape. Shokudō is the Freie Universität cafeteria at Van’t-Hoff-Straße 6, near the academic complex and the U3 Freie Universität (Thielplatz) station. It is not a restaurant with a fixed menu or a sushi bar for dinner: operator studierenden
Campus cafeteria with a Japanese-inspired fusion concept and a daily changing menu; some plans include futo maki and other Japanese dishes, not guaranteed every day. Guest prices differ from student prices.
