The award may pay current education expenses at a qualified institution of higher education or repay eligible student loans. Not every college, certificate, or loan qualifies: before accepting a position, confirm that your intended school participates in Title IV and that your lender accepts National Service Trust payments. AmeriCorps says members request payments through their My AmeriCorps account; this is not unrestricted cash automatically deposited for housing, food, or transportation.
You apply for a specific AmeriCorps service slot, not through a single application for the education award. Read the listing, verify hours, duration, duties, living support, and completion requirements, and ask the sponsor whether the slot qualifies for the Segal Award and what records you must keep. After service, members request the payment in their account. Eligibility requires successful completion and enrollment in the National Service Trust; openings, selection, and additional benefits vary by program.
The use period starts when the service term ends: the award must be used within seven years unless an extension is approved under applicable conditions. Payments are also subject to federal income tax in the year they are redeemed, and tax is not withheld automatically. AmeriCorps says a Form 1099 may be issued when the award and related payments exceed US$600 in a year.
