SMC Promise combines benefits for California residents or AB 540 students who graduated from a California high school or completed an equivalency credential and are first-time college students. For Fall 2026, the page lists an initial September opt-in and a November 1 requirements deadline; students who paid earlier may qualify for a refund if they complete the requirements within the stated period. The updated page lists a new opt-in and requirements deadline of January 10 for Winter 2027.

The ordinary enrollment requirement is 12 units; the college lists a reduced load for students with a DSPS accommodation. Students must complete the FAFSA or Dream Act financial-aid process and remain enrolled through the semester deadline. Listed benefits include enrollment and student-service fees, fee postponement for later semesters, priority registration, and a possible $500 Fall 2026 bookstore voucher only for students who also receive the California College Promise Grant fee waiver.

First complete SMC admission, then open Corsair Connect, check the SMC Promise tab, and opt in. File the 2026–27 FAFSA or CADAA, make sure Financial Aid receives the record, and enroll in the required SMC units. The portal calendar controls: a general cycle date does not replace the deadline for each semester.

Do not confuse SMC Promise with the California College Promise Grant: the latter is a state fee waiver based on eligibility and may be combined with the college program, but the two have different rules. The book voucher is not available to every participant and is not cash; it is used at the designated bookstore. The college page sets current deadlines and conditions.

Read the program profile and the official FAFSA application guide; ask the college to confirm your individual package.

To compare this award with another college offer, ask for an itemized estimate: covered tuition and fees, other grants applied first, and the balance you would still owe. Keep confirmation of every form, and when the program requires it, submit the FAFSA or CADAA for the correct academic year. An advertised maximum or the phrase “free tuition” does not automatically include books, housing, transportation, or terms the program excludes.

Information checked October 13, 2026 against official sources. Local programs change cohorts, funding, eligibility, and calendars; a closed cycle is not an open application. Confirm your situation and the current application with the program and the college financial-aid office.

Bottom line

The program and college financial-aid office confirm eligibility, covered balance, and dates; a published maximum does not guarantee an award.
