In San Diego County, one application can open the door to more than a hundred scholarship funds, but students first need to identify which program fits their circumstances. San Diego Foundation administers a community application for county residents and, separately, the National Rainbow College Fund has statewide California criteria. Both programs’ 2026–27 cycles are closed; past dates should not be presented as current deadlines.
The Community Scholarship Application brings together more than 150 opportunities, with published awards from $1,000 to more than $5,000. General 2026–27 guidance called for at least a 2.0 GPA, current residence in San Diego County for at least one year, and demonstrated need through the FAFSA or California Dream Act. If neither can be used, the foundation describes a route using the Federal Student Aid Estimator and estimated SAI. Individual funds may add major, school, or experience requirements; the common form does not erase those differences.
The National Rainbow College Fund works at a different geographic and thematic scale. For 2026–27 it accepted California residents who had lived in the state at least one year, including high-school seniors, college students, and adults returning to school, with financial need and plans to enroll in at least six units. Its criteria say it is open to all applicants and seeks to reduce barriers related to sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. The published award was $2,500, potentially usable for tuition, books, fees, room and board, and other eligible education expenses.
The practical comparison begins with residence, then academic status, planned enrollment, need documentation, and the cycle. The 2026–27 common-application deadline was March 4, 2026, at 2 p.m. Pacific; NRCF’s deadline for the same cycle has also passed. As of October 12, 2026, the official pages had not announced the next opening. Prepare a transcript, financial information, and personal responses, but check the next forms before reusing any data.
The community program may serve current college students, high-school seniors, and adult re-entry learners, not only people starting college. NRCF also offers routes for community colleges, technical schools, and universities, while requiring a minimum course load and California residence. Neither should be treated as guaranteed funding until an official award notice arrives. San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program and National Rainbow College Fund are distinct profiles within the foundation’s education work.
Applying is free. San Diego Foundation lists scholarships@sdfoundation.org and its office at 2508 Historic Decatur Road, Suite 200; NRCF also lists 619-814-1366. Ask which income year and financial documents are required, how funds are sent to the college, and whether a specific award can renew. Do not assume two funds have identical rules simply because the same organization administers them.

First identify the program and residency rule that fits; then prepare documents for the next cycle, whose dates still need confirmation.
