Rochester taco guide: a Puebla family kitchen, Monterrey plates and downtown masa

Neno’s, Taqueria Monterrey and Peach Blossom offer three distinct ways to eat tacos in Rochester, with family histories, exact preparations and practical contacts.

Three Rochester kitchens make the tortilla a starting point for very different meals. Neno’s dresses its taco trios with pickles, salsas and cheese; Taqueria Monterrey keeps onion and cilantro beside meats and northern-style potatoes; Peach Blossom gives corn dough the leading role in a small downtown operation. Choosing between them means choosing a cooking style and a pace of service.

Their family stories are part of the food. A grandmother in Puebla supplied Neno’s name and recipes. A Rochester–Monterrey couple moved from a truck to Culver Road. A mother-and-son team works with masa on East Main. This selection brings those distinctions together so a diner can decide without reconstructing three separate restaurant histories.

Neno’s: a recipe book carried from Puebla

Fidelio Jr.’s grandmother called him Neno; her cooking remains part of the Rita family’s restaurant. On Monroe Avenue, the menu allows three different tacos in one order. Pastor takes roasted pineapple; asada adds pickled nopales; carnitas and braised beef have their own vegetable and cheese finishes.

Birria is a separate four-piece order with consommé. Sesame is an ingredient throughout that birria section, while the family’s mole contains hazelnuts. Those are useful distinctions for a mixed table with dietary restrictions. The current restaurant page centers Monroe Avenue; the truck has its own event menu.

Monterrey: potatoes beside a five-taco meal

At Culver and Atlantic, Simon Tovar and Andrea Garza serve bistec, trompo, pulled-beef barbacoa and chicken on homemade corn tortillas. A five-taco plate comes with sautéed onion and potatoes. The smaller lunch order changes to three tacos with rice and beans, making portion and accompaniment part of the choice.

Mixed tacos let a first visit cover several fillings. For something larger, Pirata and Gringa quesadillas distinguish bistec from trompo beneath Chihuahua cheese. The small counter-service restaurant has parking behind the building and direct pickup and delivery, with a 7 p.m. closing and no Sunday service.

Peach Blossom: leave time for the masa

The East Main Street kitchen works on a smaller scale. Tacos, sopes and quesadillas offer different shapes and thicknesses of corn dough, with pastor, asada and other fillings. Choosing a sope changes the structure of the meal as much as choosing a different meat.

Afternoon hours are short, and public customers describe waits alongside their enthusiasm for the food and friendly service. This is the stop to plan within a Tuesday–Saturday day rather than after a late evening. The profile gives the current local contact, takeaway information and the business’s social account.

Bottom line

Choose Neno’s for a dressed mixed trio, Monterrey for a northern-style taco plate, or Peach Blossom for a slower downtown masa kitchen.
