Where are Portland, Maine’s farmers markets, and how do their seasons differ?

Compare the producer market at Deering Oaks, a dated downtown series and the indoor winter market at Stevens Square.

Portland, Maine farmers markets move from park to square to winter hall

Portland, Maine’s market calendar follows the weather and the growing season, but the city has more than a short summer window. A Saturday gathering in Deering Oaks, a downtown series in Monument Square and an indoor winter market at Stevens Square give shoppers three distinct settings. One is a large producer market that continues outdoors into late November; one is a small, dated summer series organized by Portland Downtown; the third shifts the farm stands under a roof when cold weather arrives. The practical guide is a calendar by venue, not a single year-round address.

The anchor is Portland Farmers’ Market at Deering Oaks, on the Park Avenue side of the park. The association’s 2026 schedule lists Saturdays and Wednesdays from April 18 through November 25, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; its current notice says November markets open at 8 a.m. The farm-only rule is a meaningful distinction: the association says accepted Maine farmers sell goods they grow, raise or produce in Maine. Its published range includes seasonal fruit and vegetables, herbs and seedlings, flowers, honey and maple products, dairy, eggs, meat, pickles and fermented foods.

That format rewards a morning visit and a conversation with the person who grew or made the food. The market describes Deering Oaks as a relaxed neighborhood setting where shoppers meet farmers and follow Maine’s changing seasons. Its food-access booth accepts SNAP/EBT and matches SNAP spending at 100 percent with Maine Harvest Bucks tokens for eligible produce and food-bearing plants. A shared price list is not published, and the exact farm roster changes, so compare offerings at the stalls and check the organizer’s weekly updates. The regular outdoor market’s published location is Deering Oaks Park; November hours differ from the earlier summer start.

Downtown shoppers also have the Monumental Farmers’ Market in Monument Square. A City of Portland license approved in May 2026 allows Portland Downtown to use the Square and Monument Way for a farmers’ market on the first Friday of each month, June through October, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Portland Downtown’s description presents the series as a mix of Maine farmers, makers and crafters. The 2026 permit dates have now passed; no 2027 schedule is posted in the sources checked for this guide, so treat this as a seasonal downtown option to watch for a future announcement rather than a market open every Friday.

When the outdoor calendar ends, the Portland Winter Farmers’ Market takes over the Stevens Square Community Center gymnasium, 631 Stevens Avenue. The association has posted the 2026–27 season for Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., December 5 through April 10, with no market on December 26. This indoor setting extends direct farm shopping into winter. The Maine Harvest Bucks directory independently lists the winter venue and its SNAP match, while the host community center confirms the gymnasium location and Saturday hours. The schedule is prospective as of October 30, so check for weather notices and holiday changes before traveling.

There is a useful difference between following the Portland Farmers’ Market association and looking for a separate downtown event. The association’s current homepage lists both outdoor weekdays at Deering Oaks, while its older FAQ still describes the historic Monument Square Wednesday location; this guide relies on the current dated schedule for Deering Oaks and identifies the 2026 Monumental series separately by the city permit. That distinction avoids sending shoppers to an outdated location. The winter market is also a separate seasonal venue, not an extra Saturday session at the park.

For a simple plan, choose Deering Oaks while its 2026 outdoor dates remain on the calendar, look for the Monumental Market only when a specific first-Friday date is announced, and use Stevens Square after the winter market opens in December. The neighborhood changes with the address: a broad park-side walk at Deering Oaks, a compact civic square downtown, then an indoor community-center gym in the Deering neighborhood. Check the correct organizer’s page, bring a list that can adapt to seasonal availability, and ask the market information booth about SNAP tokens and the Maine Harvest Bucks match.

Bottom line

Check the venue against the date: Deering Oaks is the outdoor anchor, Monumental is a limited 2026 series, and Stevens Square hosts the coming winter market.
