In Okayama, two of the city's best-known sites face one another across the Asahi River. Korakuen, a strolling garden created for the Ikeda clan from 1687, spreads into ponds, lawns and pavilions; the black castle recalls the power of the former domain. Their proximity makes it possible to visit both in one day without spending the day on transport, although the garden's scale calls for a slower walk and more time than a quick photo stop.
A useful route begins at Korakuen when it opens: 7:30 am between 20 March and 30 September, and 8 am during its autumn and winter schedule. The garden retains the openness of a feudal lord's retreat, combining natural and cultivated scenery: the central pond, artificial hills, rice fields and tea pavilion change with the seasons. Cherry blossoms arrive in spring, irises in June, lotus in July and coloured leaves in autumn. One of Japan's Three Great Gardens, it opened to the public in 1884.
From the south gate, Tsurumi Bridge crosses the Asahi and reaches the castle in a few minutes. The present keep was rebuilt after the war; its dark exterior earned it the Crow Castle nickname, while the interior works as a museum about the Ikeda clan, the castle and domain life. Admission is ¥500 and last entry is 5 pm. Visitors value the upper-floor outlook and interactive displays, while noting that the interior is not an original feudal structure. A combined garden-and-castle ticket costs ¥800 and makes it straightforward to see both sites.
From Okayama Station, a bus to the garden or a tram to Shiroshita are practical options; from the tram stop, the castle is about a ten-minute walk. To avoid retracing your steps, enter the garden first, leave by the river side and finish at the keep. The open lawns receive strong sun in summer, so bring water and sun protection and use the pavilions for a break. Korakuen closes at 6 pm in the longer season and 5 pm in the cooler period; check for events or partial closures. Two or three hours in the garden and an hour at the castle make a balanced day.
