Maskay guide

Where can you watch sports on big screens and get a meal in Oakland?

Oakland offers three different game-day plans: TVs among jerseys in Rockridge, a downtown patio projector and a historic Temescal bar with sports screens and shuffleboard.

Oakland’s sports bars are spread across distinct neighbourhoods rather than gathered in one district. Rockridge follows College Avenue around its BART station; downtown offers an urban night out between 12th Street and Lake Merritt; Temescal, farther north, pairs Telegraph Avenue shops with long-running bars. For a Rockridge game, George & Walt's combines TVs in several directions with pub food. Downtown, Mad Oak adds a patio and rooftop deck. Kingfish keeps a classic neighbourhood-bar feel, with screens beside its outdoor bar.

George & Walt's is the straightforward choice for football or basketball with a table and a food menu. Oakland’s visitor guide describes signed jerseys, televisions across the pub and hot sandwiches with garlicky fries; it also places the bar on the College Avenue commercial corridor. Rockridge BART serves the same area, although travellers should check the route from the specific station exit and the schedule for a late return.

Downtown offers two different formats. Mad Oak spans two levels, with a patio and rooftop, around forty draft beers according to its site, counter-service food and several TVs. Its FAQ makes one practical point clear: television sound is usually off and is turned on for major events, so confirm before travelling for a particular final. For a neighbourhood-bar outing, Kingfish shifts the trip north to Temescal: its site highlights shuffleboard and an upstairs event room, while the local tourism bureau confirms an outdoor bar with sports TVs.

The choice depends more on the kind of outing than on a promise to show every game: George & Walt's offers tables, food and screens throughout; Mad Oak adds outdoor space but does not normally promise game audio; Kingfish is a traditional pub, and its site does not publish a kitchen menu. Before heading out, check whether the venue will carry your matchup, whether sound will be on, the current access rules and hours. BART can work for Rockridge; for downtown and Temescal, check each trip and parking separately rather than assuming the bar provides its own lot.

Bottom line
