Centenaire and Carras: two public beaches and a choice of access
Reaching the Mediterranean in Nice does not require renting a lounger. The city distinguishes public beaches from private concessions that charge for their services. That difference matters especially to visitors planning a simple day by the water or needing help to enter it. Centenaire and Carras are public beaches with a municipal summer service that helps people with disabilities or limited mobility get into the water, but they are not interchangeable for every traveler: one is central, while the other lies much farther west.
Centenaire: a beach that fits a central walk
Plage du Centenaire is listed at 1 promenade des Anglais, on a stretch easy to combine with Old Nice and the city center. In summer, the municipal listing describes ramps, amphibious wheelchairs and trained assistance, along with shade and adapted facilities. The help is free and requires neither advance booking nor proof of eligibility. Reaching the public shore does not require paying for nearby private beach services, although each concession sets its own fees.
Carras: farther west, with its own support
Plage de Carras is at 285 promenade des Anglais. It takes longer to reach from the center but may be the natural choice for someone staying in western Nice. Here too the city lists free summer bathing assistance, ramps, flotation equipment, accessible showers, changing rooms and toilets, and reserved parking. Carras appeared on the city’s 2026 Blue Flag list; that annual award cannot replace a check of sea and water conditions on the actual day.
Many Nice beaches are covered in rounded pebbles. If you expect fine sand, that changes the plan: suitable shoes can make walking and entering the water more comfortable. Public access and seasonal support must also be kept separate. In October, do not assume that summer staff, lifeguards or all the equipment are in place. Check current dates and conditions on the city pages for Centenaire and Carras, as well as bathing notices. The best beach is the one you can reach and use safely on the date of your trip.
