Maskay guide

Where can you find Newark farmers markets for local produce and food benefits?

A neighborhood guide to Down Bottom Farms, the Beth Greenhouse and Weequahic Park, with dates and food-access details.

Newark’s market map connects an Ironbound farm, a hospital greenhouse and Weequahic

Newark’s farmers markets make food access visible in three very different places: a community farm in the Ironbound, a hydroponic greenhouse inside a hospital lobby in the South Ward, and a seasonal market at a playground beside Weequahic Park. They are not one shared weekly circuit. Their 2026 calendars overlap only part of the year, and by late October the greenhouse is the one with November dates still posted. The practical guide is to match the day and neighborhood to the market, then check the organizer’s update before traveling.

At Down Bottom Farms, 377–385 Ferry Street, the market grows out of an urban agriculture project that turned a former freight rail site into a community asset. The Ironbound Community Corporation says Saturday sales run from mid-May through the end of October, with an additional Tuesday market from June through October, 2 to 7 p.m. The stalls feature Jersey Fresh produce from farms in Newark and beyond. In the wider farm project, the organization describes an orchard, berry beds, a hoop house and community growing space; those features explain why this market has a working-farm context rather than a purely retail setting.

Payment information is unusually explicit here: the organizer lists EBT, SNAP, WIC, Senior Vouchers, Visa, Mastercard and cash. The Tuesday schedule is the last regular weekday window published for 2026, and the Saturday season ends at October’s close. A visitor planning after the season should not assume the same market returns on a specific date next spring; the current page provides the recurring seasonal pattern, not a 2027 opening announcement. The farm also lists community festivals and education programs separately, so those activities are not part of every market day.

In the South Ward, the Beth Greenhouse Farmers Market puts a hydroponic growing operation inside the Newark Strong Lobby at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, 201 Lyons Avenue at Osborne Terrace. The hospital says the greenhouse produces more than 5,000 pounds of lettuce, herbs and greens annually, and the weekly market combines those greens with produce from New Jersey rural and urban farmers. Its 2026 event calendar names the remaining Thursday dates through November 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; admission is free and no registration is required. The schedule makes it the clearest option for a planned November visit.

The Beth market also has the most specific benefit instructions in this group. It accepts SNAP, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits. Through City Green’s Good Food Bucks, the hospital says SNAP shoppers can pay 50 percent of their bill; the program’s own terms determine eligible purchases. Its position in the hospital lobby and Lyons Avenue entrance is useful to know because this is not a street-corner stall or a separate greenhouse entrance. The greenhouse itself offers educational visits and hands-on hydroponic activities, but those are separate from shopping at the weekly market and should be arranged with the facility.

West of the South Ward, Weequahic Park Farmers Market was organized with the Weequahic Park Association at Elizabeth Avenue Playground. The 2026 calendar described biweekly Saturdays from June 6, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with seasonal produce, local vendors and artisans. The organizer lists WIC/SFMNP, SNAP/EBT and Double Good Food Bucks. Its last dated 2026 events concluded October 24; the series page has no later 2026 market date posted. It remains useful as a record of a neighborhood market and its food-access approach, but visitors should wait for a new season announcement rather than travel expecting it to be operating now.

The contrast is as useful as the shopping list. Down Bottom is an outdoor community farm with a twice-weekly seasonal pattern; Beth is a weekly hospital-lobby market with greens grown on site and November dates; Weequahic was a biweekly neighborhood event whose 2026 dates have finished. None publishes a single price sheet covering every farmer. Bring a reusable bag, use the benefit instructions attached to the specific market and check the current event page for closures or vendor changes. Newark’s food markets are small pieces of a larger local growing network, and each reflects the institution and neighborhood around it.

Bottom line

For a late-season visit, the Beth Greenhouse calendar is the one with November dates; treat the October-ending Down Bottom and Weequahic markets as completed 2026 seasons unless organizers post a new schedule.
