How do you apply for New York TAP, and how much tuition can it cover?

Check income limits, residency, the DREAM Act route, credit requirements, and the 2026–27 deadline for New York TAP.

For New York students, TAP can reduce part of a tuition bill, but the award depends on the student’s file and enrollment. HESC lists $1,000 to $5,665 for 2026–27 and a June 30, 2027 deadline. The state program profile explains who may apply, which costs it considers, and how to keep the award.

The agency calculates the annual amount using net taxable income, dependency status, family members in college, tuition, and other New York aid. Two students with similar incomes may therefore receive different awards. TAP applies to tuition; it should not be treated as full coverage of housing, food, books, transportation, or every college charge.

The standard route requires 12 continuous months of legal state residence before enrollment and U.S. citizenship or eligible noncitizen status. HESC also allows certain students who do not meet the standard immigration rule to seek eligibility through the NYS DREAM Act. That route has its own criteria, so complete it and wait for confirmation before counting on TAP.

Published net taxable income limits are $125,000 for dependent students and certain independent students with dependents, $60,000 for married independent students without dependents, and $30,000 for single independent students without dependents. Applicants also need a high-school diploma, equivalency, or approved Ability to Benefit result; an approved New York college and degree program; and satisfactory progress. Full-time study usually requires 12 credits each semester; part-time awards follow different rules.

File FAFSA and use its TAP link, or apply directly through HESC; some students will use NYS DREAM Act. Apply every year and monitor credits, academic progress, and loan standing. The posted 2026–27 deadline is June 30, 2027, although a college may set an earlier priority date. Save the confirmation, check your state account, and ask the financial-aid office how a lighter course load or program change affects the award.
