New Mexico Lottery Scholarship: graduate eligibility and tuition coverage

Students must enroll full time at a public college within 16 months and maintain a 2.5 GPA.

New Mexico’s Lottery Scholarship is aimed at recent graduates beginning college in the state. The official page currently advertises coverage of 100% of tuition for eligible students, but qualification depends on when enrollment begins, course load, and grades. The Higher Education Department profile links to the eligibility path and campus financial-aid help.

Students must be considered New Mexico residents, must not already hold their first bachelor’s degree, and must start at a New Mexico public college or university within 16 months of graduating from a New Mexico high school, earning a high-school equivalency credential, or receiving the state homeschool certificate. The official page includes certain GED and disability cases as well. Residency for state aid can have special rules and exceptions: living in New Mexico or receiving resident tuition does not by itself confirm scholarship residency.

The first enrollment period, often called the bridge or qualifying semester, establishes eligibility; Lottery coverage begins afterward when the conditions are met. During that initial term, the college may use its own bridge award or the Opportunity Scholarship for tuition and course-specific charges. Full time means 15 credits at a four-year university and 12 at a community college. Summer enrollment is optional, but continuous full-time enrollment is expected in fall and spring.

Current guidance requires students to earn and maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. The official page describes up to seven semesters of tuition for a bachelor’s student and up to three semesters at a community college, or until the first bachelor’s degree is completed where applicable. The award pays tuition, not every fee or housing, food, books, transport, or child care. Opportunity Scholarship may supplement course-specific fees, so ask financial aid for a cost sheet separating tuition, fees, and other expenses.

There is no separate Lottery application: New Mexico public colleges identify and award eligible students when they enroll and register for classes, but students should tell the financial-aid office they are establishing eligibility and confirm their files are complete. If a serious event forces a withdrawal or drop below the minimum load, contact the college immediately; an approved leave of up to one year may be available in some cases. For planning, get your institution’s credit and GPA rules in writing and ask how Lottery, Opportunity, Pell, and other scholarships will combine before counting on full coverage.
