In Nevada, Nevada Promise and the Silver State Opportunity Grant (SSOG) are not interchangeable forms. Promise targets a recent-graduate cohort and conditions the award on steps involving mentoring, orientation and community service. SSOG is a need-based grant at participating public colleges and is considered through FAFSA or the alternate application identified by the campus. Start by asking when you graduate, which school you plan to attend and whether you already hold a college degree.
For the class graduating in 2027 and planning to attend the College of Southern Nevada in fall, the official Nevada Promise application window is August 1–October 31, 2026. You must be a Nevada resident, have no associate or bachelor’s degree, and meet an eligible high-school or GED/HiSET/TASC route under the state’s age and date rules. The scholarship requires at least 12 credits applicable to your program in fall; waitlisted courses do not count. The Promise application and CSN admission are separate steps: submit both and validate your account to access the student portal.
The checklist continues after the application. For this cohort, orientation, training and mentor authorization are due by March 1, 2027; the 2027–28 FAFSA or non-filer declaration by April 1; eight community-service hours by May 1; and verification plus a mentor meeting, when applicable, by July 1. If you have not completed English or math at an NSHE school, a placement test may be required before advising. Steps and dates can change, so save confirmations and monitor the CSN portal and email.
SSOG may be the route for community/state-college students outside the Promise cohort or those whose college needs to review financial need. NSHE requires at least 12 applicable credits, college readiness, Nevada residency for tuition and an SAI of 8,500 or less; priority first goes to 15 or more credits, then final-term students below 15, and then other students taking at least 12, in ascending SAI order. It lists a maximum annual amount of up to $5,500, subject to allocation and formula. The system page still labels its cost-of-attendance table 2025–26, so do not use it as a 2026–27 budget. In 2026, CSN students said SSOG was not yet visible in their offers while the institution finalized parameters; that local response does not set a Nevada-wide timeline.
Promise is last-dollar aid for remaining tuition and mandatory registration fees after Pell, SSOG, Millennium and other gift aid; CSN says up to three years, fall/spring only, with several surcharges and living costs excluded. SSOG uses a different calculation and does not guarantee an award. Ask the college to separate tuition, mandatory fees, special course charges, books, housing and transport and confirm which aid has already posted. At CSN, Nevada Promise is at (702) 651-7500 and Financial Aid at (702) 651-4303. Contact NSHE if your school is not CSN, and do not treat a student thread as an official decision on your account.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
