Moving to Denver, Colorado, with children: how do I check their school options?

For a family moving to Denver, the school question should be settled with the exact home address and the current enrollment office, before a rental advertisement becomes a promise. The closest school, the school a parent prefers and the school assignment attached to an address can be different. Denver Public Schools' 2026–27 enrollment guide provides the framework, while Choice and Enrollment Services can clarify how it applies to a child arriving during the school year.

Find out whether the address has a boundary school or a zone

The district's School Finder accepts an address and shows the relevant boundary school or enrollment zone. Its current guide states that incoming kindergarten-through-12th-grade students living in the DPS district are guaranteed a seat at their boundary school or one of the schools in their enrollment zone. A zone is a geographic area shared by several schools; the guarantee is not an automatic place at whichever one a family names first.

This distinction matters when comparing homes. A property advertisement mentioning a desirable school is not an enrollment decision, and a Denver-area mailing address is not sufficient proof of DPS district membership. Ask the enrollment office to confirm the exact address, grade and current-year route before signing a lease principally for a particular school. Keep the response and any instructions for the application.

SchoolChoice and registration are different steps

SchoolChoice allows families to apply to other public-school options as well as those associated with their address. The district's 2026–27 guide explains that the regular Round 1 matching process considers preferences, admission priorities and available space. An application is not the same as an accepted seat, and a waitlist position can change.

The Round 1 window in that guide ran from December 2, 2025 to January 20, 2026. Those dates are already past at this September 2026 check and should not be presented as an open application window for a newly arriving family. The current SchoolChoice site identifies a separate Current-Year Enrollment section for 2026–27. Contact the office about the child's actual arrival, rather than waiting for an annual deadline that applies to another stage of enrollment.

Once accepted or enrolled, registration is the annual update of student and family information, including emergency contacts and health information. The guide distinguishes this from choosing a school and directs families to confirm registration dates with their school. Keep the previous school's records available and ask which documents must be submitted for the child's particular situation; do not assume an existing portal account completes every step of a transfer.

Ask how the school fits your child's day

Use the official school profiles to compare academic programs, extracurricular activities and student services, then contact the schools about the details that matter to your family. Ask specifically about multilingual support, disability-related services, transport and care before or after classes. The guide describes different school types and specialist programs, but a district-wide description does not establish that each program is available at every campus or that every applicant qualifies.

Preschool deserves a separate inquiry. The 2026–27 guide states that preschool places are limited and enrollment is not guaranteed; ECE-4 applications involve both DPS SchoolChoice and Colorado Universal Preschool. Do not extend the kindergarten-through-12th-grade address guarantee to a three- or four-year-old's preschool application.

Choice and Enrollment Services publishes 720-423-3493 and schoolchoice@dpsk12.org. A current official DPS school registration page lists hotline hours Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m.; confirm holiday access before calling. A useful school search ends with an understood assignment and a workable daily routine, rather than a ranking based on a building's online popularity.
