Missouri A+ Scholarship: high-school requirements, FAFSA and eligible colleges

A+ may cover eligible tuition at participating schools, but students earn it in high school. Check service, GPA, FAFSA, credits and the 48-month limit.

Missouri’s state A+ Scholarship begins in high school, not when the college bill arrives. Students must graduate from a designated A+ school after signing an agreement, then attend a participating public community college, public vocational/technical school or certain private two-year schools. It is not automatic coverage at Mizzou or every four-year university. Before choosing a destination, check the state list and ask the campus how it verifies the A+ transcript mark and supporting records.

High-school requirements include two years at a designated A+ school, an unweighted GPA of at least 2.5, 95% attendance, 50 hours of unpaid tutoring or mentoring, good citizenship and proficiency in Algebra I or another approved math exam. Some graduating classes may use an ACT/Pre-ACT score-and-GPA alternative. Ask the A+ coordinator to review every item before graduation; a missing service hour or grade can affect eligibility even after college admission.

For 2026–27, reimbursement is capped at $240 per credit hour or $8 per clock hour. A+ applies after Pell and other non-loan federal aid, so the award may be zero if that aid already covers tuition and general fees. The state does not guarantee payment of every charge or unlimited funds. Books, food, housing and other expenses can remain, and the per-credit cap may differ from the rate charged by your school. Ask financial aid for a semester-by-semester net-cost estimate.

There is no state paper application, but a college may request a transcript with the A+ mark or other records; FAFSA is required every year. Most students must attend full-time and complete 12 credits in fall/spring or six in summer to keep eligibility for the next term. Use ends 48 months after high-school graduation, after an associate degree or at 105% of the program hours, whichever comes first. Transferring between colleges, including accepted credits from out of state, can use up that limit. Request an audit before switching schools.

A Missouri family asked online whether A+ could still be used after a student started at a four-year university and then moved to a community college. Replies pointed to the time and credit limits, but they are peer comments. The high-school A+ coordinator decides school requirements; the receiving campus reviews FAFSA, enrollment and account balance. If you transfer the benefit, notify the state department, which lists 800-473-6757, option 4. Do not register for extra credits assuming they will all be reimbursed; ask the school to confirm eligible costs.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
