Mississippi has three undergraduate aid programs that families often group together, but each has a different entry point. HELP considers financial need, Pell and income limits; MTAG assists residents who are not eligible for the maximum Pell award; MESG rewards high academic achievement. HELP, MTAG and MESG use the MAAPP application, but students should not assume they can stack several state grants in one semester: the agency applies incompatibility rules and awards the largest eligible grant allowed.
HELP may cover tuition and required fees for a first certificate, associate or bachelor’s degree at an eligible school. New high-school graduates generally need one year of residency, a 2.5 GPA, ACT 20 (superscores accepted), the core curriculum, FAFSA-demonstrated need and partial or full Pell eligibility, income eligibility and full-time enrollment. There is an additional timing rule: applicants must apply and qualify within one year of graduation. The grant renews annually, requires 12 passed credits per semester and a 2.5 college GPA, and is not available for the regular summer term.
MTAG has a different formula: one year of residency, a 2.5 GPA, ACT 15 for freshmen or documented equivalency, full-time enrollment and Pell eligibility below the maximum. Published caps reach $500 per year for freshmen/sophomores and $1,000 for juniors/seniors; neither amount is guaranteed, and the college classifies the student. MESG targets merit: the standard route requires a 3.5 GPA and ACT 29 or SAT 1330, or National Merit finalist/semifinalist status, residency and full-time enrollment. Its maximum is $2,500 per year subject to funding; both programs have duration limits and renewal rules students should check on the official page.
Deadlines depend on the grant. HELP’s MAAPP window generally runs October 1 through March 31, with documents, including FAFSA, due April 30. MTAG and MESG applications close September 15, with supporting documents due October 15. Verify dates for each aid year; FAFSA does not replace MAAPP. Gather two residency proofs if requested, a household verification worksheet, transcript and official ACT/SAT records. The HELP income table may change: do not use a prior year’s PDF as the current threshold without checking the table linked from the state portal.
Student comments from 2026 describe portals where HELP still appears as anticipated as well as cases where it has posted. That does not establish a statewide delay. If your account status differs, check the MAAPP dashboard, confirm FAFSA and documents were received, and ask the college for an expected posting date. Build a separate budget for tuition, fees, books, housing and transport; the grants discussed here do not promise to pay every cost. For an approved-school search or renewal question, Mississippi’s Office of State Financial Aid lists 800-327-2980, 601-432-6997 and sfa@mississippi.edu.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
