What services does Mexico’s San Francisco Consulate offer, and does it also serve Hawaii?

Guide to the San Francisco office: services, assigned California counties and Hawaii jurisdiction, appointments and desk-specific hours.

Maskay editorial team Updated

Mexico’s Consulate General in San Francisco serves specifically assigned northern California counties and the state of Hawaii. It is not a California-wide office: the SRE lists the counties under its jurisdiction, and a nearby address may belong to another consulate. The office is at 532 Folsom Street in SoMa; Embarcadero and Montgomery are the BART stations the consulate identifies as transit references.

Services for Mexican nationals include passports, consular IDs, voter credentials, Civil Registry matters—including birth registration—and notarial acts such as powers of attorney and wills. The site also provides information about Mexican visas and consular protection. Its FAQ says several procedures require appointments for both first-time applications and renewals. Appointments are arranged through MiConsulado, by phone or WhatsApp, and the office says they are free; open the exact procedure page to confirm current documents and fees.

A practical point is that “consulate hours” do not mean one time window for every service. The federal directory lists Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; the local portal breaks this down as documentation and Civil Registry from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., protection until 5 p.m. and community programs at a separate time. Google Maps shows a 7:30 a.m. opening. To avoid arriving when a desk is closed, confirm the specific service rather than relying only on general hours.

The website also describes restrictions on bulky bags and backpacks and lists community, health, financial-guidance and education services. Anyone travelling from Hawaii should account for the distance and check in advance whether a procedure requires in-person attendance in San Francisco, whether another format is available and which original documents are required. The consulate does not replace private legal counsel or decide U.S. immigration matters; its published role is Mexican consular service and guidance.

Comments on the exact Google Maps listing show different experiences: some visitors praise specific procedures and useful assistance, while others mention appointment or waiting challenges. That range cannot predict an individual visit. This guide focuses on what readers can verify and prepare—jurisdiction, appointment, requirements, desk hours and entry rules—and links to the detailed San Francisco Consulate profile.

Bottom line

First verify that your county is within the consular district, then book through MiConsulado for procedures that require an appointment. Plan around your service desk’s hours rather than a general window.
