Los Angeles College Promise (LACP) combines tuition support and student advising at community colleges in the Los Angeles district. LACCD, the City, schools, and community partners take part, but campus requirements are not identical. The LACP and LACC profile explains why the program should not be confused with a cash scholarship or a promise to cover every expense.
In general, first-time college students may participate; the district also includes some students returning to community college after a break who have good academic standing and fewer than 60 attempted units. Students need a high-school diploma or equivalent and California residency or eligibility for in-state tuition. The FAFSA or California Dream Act Application is part of the process. Admission alone is not enough: students submit an LACP interest form and complete orientation, an education plan, and a summer transition experience.
Requirements become specific by campus and cohort. LACC’s published Summer/Fall 2026 list called for 12 units per semester, Summer Bridge, English and math by the end of the first year, a 2.0 GPA, 18 completed units to enter year two, and eight tutoring hours each semester. LACCD also lists exceptions and a returning-student path; campus guidance confirms whether someone who previously attended a four-year university can use that route—generally, they cannot. Check the rules matching your college and transcript before budgeting on two years of aid.
The core benefit is eligible tuition or enrollment fees during an approved term. The district describes support for up to two years, while LACC publishes initial coverage by academic year and makes a second year conditional on continued eligibility. The district FAQ says books and supplies are excluded, winter is not covered, and summer support is limited to formal transition activity; specific fees can vary by campus. Request an itemized account estimate, since a small fee balance may remain even when the program is advertised as “free tuition.”
The district’s priority date is generally May 1, and some colleges may accept applications into summer. That is a priority date, not a guarantee that every cohort is still open: the pages reviewed list Summer/Fall 2026 requirements but do not yet provide a full calendar for the next cycle. Apply to your campus, submit the FAFSA or CADAA and LACP interest form, complete orientation, confirm Summer Bridge, and ask in writing which charges your award letter will cover before registering.
