Work Ready Kentucky or KEES? A guide to college and training aid

Compare Work Ready Kentucky and KEES: 2026–27 eligibility, FAFSA, career fields and GPA, fee limits, and how to ask your college for the net balance.

Kentucky has two programs that can be confused during first-year planning, but they serve different students. The Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship funds approved credentials and applied degrees in high-demand fields; KEES recognizes high-school achievement and can follow a student into college. Before comparing dollars, decide whether your goal is a bachelor’s degree or an occupational credential, review your GPA and check whether your program is on the state’s 2026–27 list.

For Work Ready Kentucky, first confirm that you are a Kentucky resident and do not already hold an associate degree or higher. The 2026–27 program includes construction, education, healthcare, manufacturing and logistics, and professional, scientific and technical services; the program and school must be approved. Submit both FAFSA and a WRKS application through MyKHEAA. Awards depend on available funds and the date you enter your school and term preferences. If you started a certificate at a different campus or your program has a similar but not identical name, ask KHEAA to verify eligibility before budgeting the award.

WRKS calculates aid after other federal and state grants and scholarships. Its cap cannot exceed the KCTCS in-state tuition-and-fee rate, and the fee portion cannot exceed $400 per year. “Up to the remaining cost” therefore does not mean books, rent, transport, meals or every lab charge will be paid. KEES, by contrast, is based on high-school achievement: its scale begins at a 2.75 GPA and may add awards for ACT/SAT and AP, IB or CAI exams. KEES has usage limits—eight semesters, five years after graduation or until a bachelor’s degree, whichever comes first—and college renewal rules. It is not an unlimited lifetime balance.

Student comments help identify questions to ask, not establish general deadlines. In July 2024, University of Kentucky users discussed whether KEES would appear before a student-account due date; one reply described the credit remaining estimated until charges were finalized. That account does not represent every institution or the 2026–27 state rule. Ask your aid office for the certification date, which parts of your package are final and whether you must temporarily pay a balance before funds post. Do not treat an estimate in a portal as money already applied.

Practical order: file FAFSA; create or review MyKHEAA; confirm school, major, term and amount; compare the full financial-aid letter and save communications. For a workforce certificate, also request the cost of tools, licenses, materials, uniforms and exam fees. KHEAA lists 800-928-8926 for general help and grants@kheaa.com for grant questions. If you have both KEES and WRKS, ask how they coordinate on your account; KHEAA and the college can explain which aid applies to tuition and fees and which costs remain yours.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
