Maskay guide

Which free Nantes garden should you choose: Jardin des Plantes or Île de Versailles?

Two free Nantes walks at different paces: botanical collections near the station or a small island beside the Erdre.

Nantes offers two gardens that do not ask for the same kind of morning. Nantes Jardin des Plantes, beside the station, spreads seven hectares of botanical collections, paths and play areas. Île de Versailles is a smaller island on the Erdre, with a Japanese-inspired garden and waterside views. Both walks are free. Choose by whether you want hours among plants or a brief pause beside the river.

Jardin des Plantes is convenient before or after a train journey. The city counts it among France’s major botanical gardens and provides room to walk, sit and play. Its greenhouses do not share one access rule: some can be entered freely, others require a code from reception, and some are seen on guided visits. Treat the outdoor garden as the reliable plan and verify any particular greenhouse if it is your main reason to come. Tram line 1 stops at Gare Nord – Jardin des Plantes nearby.

Île de Versailles trades breadth for atmosphere. The city describes Erdre-valley trees around the island, a Japanese-inspired garden, exhibitions in the Maison de l’Erdre and a play area for children aged six to twelve. Motte Rouge on tram line 2 is close. Some visitors praise its calm; others find it busy during holidays or the Japanese design more modest than photographs suggest. A walk on the island does not include boat hire, which is a separate activity.

On October 1, 2026, the city listed both gardens as open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., but closing times change by season. Check your actual date before planning an evening walk. For a family wanting space, toilets and a flexible route, Jardin des Plantes is the stronger choice. For a quiet half-hour beside the Erdre, choose the island. If time allows, you need not choose permanently: they offer two different free ways to read Nantes’s landscape.

Bottom line
