Newark’s Irish pubs do not sit on one compact strip: this route moves between the university district downtown and the Ironbound, two areas separated by Newark Penn Station. McGovern’s Tavern, on New Street across from Rutgers–Newark, is the historic stop. It opened in 1936, serves Guinness, and pairs beer with pub food. East of the station, Bello’s Pub & Grill appears in the local visitor guide’s Irish-pub selection, although its broader concept is that of a gastropub.
Newark’s history helps explain why this guide looks beyond Celtic decor. Irish communities arrived in the city during the nineteenth century; McGovern’s account says Frank McGovern, who came from Ireland, opened the tavern in 1936 as a meeting place for new arrivals. Its official story describes later family continuity and a gradual expansion of the kitchen and event space. Today, the area around Rutgers–Newark mixes a campus, offices, cultural venues, and taverns. Across Penn Station, the Ironbound is a residential and commercial neighborhood known for its restaurants and shops representing many communities.
For Guinness, McGovern’s official drinks list is the clearest reference: it names Guinness and Smithwick’s along with seasonal beers, Irish coffee, and cocktails made with Irish spirits. The kitchen publishes wings, burgers, sandwiches, late-night options, and Shepherd’s Pie, noted as available after 3 p.m. Catering and a private room for gatherings are also offered by arrangement. Draft selections can change. The business website does not show a complete weekly schedule, and public directories disagree, so confirm the current day and time before setting out.
Bello’s meets a different need: a meal near Newark Penn and a broad menu that ranges from starters and wings to pasta, pizza, salads, and sandwiches. Newark Alliance includes it in its Irish-pub list but calls it a gastropub; we do not present it as a duplicate of McGovern’s or claim that it serves Guinness without a current menu confirming it. Comments tied to this location often mention beer variety, generous portions, and convenience for a stop before or after a train or game. We could not verify current reservation options or dedicated parking.
Transit is part of the plan: NJ TRANSIT connects Newark Penn with regional rail, PATH, and Newark Light Rail. Visitors arriving by train can make Bello’s a nearby stop; McGovern’s sits in the Rutgers–Newark area, so visiting both means moving between downtown and the Ironbound rather than assuming they are next door. We make no blanket safety claim about the whole city: the route and time matter, and events can change pedestrian activity. Check directions, current business hours, and the schedule for games or performances before leaving.
