Idaho Opportunity Scholarship: eligibility, FAFSA and renewal guide

The 2026–27 cycle closes March 1, 2027. Check GPA, residency, need-and-merit ranking, the four-year limit and what may remain on your bill.

Idaho high-school graduates planning a university, associate degree or certificate can look at the Idaho Opportunity Scholarship. For 2026–27, both the application and FAFSA must be complete by March 1, 2027. The program lists up to $3,500 a year for up to four years, but the maximum is not automatic: the award fills a gap after other grants and scholarships, and the number of offers depends on available funding.

Check four items first: Idaho residency; an Idaho high-school, home-school or equivalent credential; an unweighted cumulative GPA of at least 2.7; and fall enrollment in the upcoming academic year for a first eligible certificate, associate or bachelor’s degree. The state says the GPA minimum cannot be waived. If your transcript lists several averages, ask your counselor which one is reported as unweighted and keep that confirmation before submitting the portal application.

Scholarship Idaho opened its 2026–27 application October 1, 2026, with a March 1, 2027 deadline; FAFSA has the same cutoff for this award. The first round of offers is expected in early to mid-April 2027. Notices arrive by email and must be accepted by signing in to the account: a text may remind you to check, but is not the offer itself. Set an April reminder, check spam and accept by the date in the email; the state warns that a missed offer deadline counts as a rejection that cannot be appealed.

Idaho ranks applicants using need and merit: 70% of the score comes from FAFSA’s Student Aid Index and 30% from GPA. This ranks applications; it does not guarantee an award to everyone who meets the minimum, because the number of scholarships depends on funding. If you have Pell, a local scholarship or other aid, the college calculates the remaining gap in its cost of attendance and the Opportunity award can fill that space up to the cap. At College of Idaho and Northwest Nazarene, the state cost baseline may fall below the actual price, and some awards can drop to $0. Request a written breakdown of tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and transportation before deciding how much to borrow.

Renewal requires a 2.7 GPA, satisfactory progress and an annual questionnaire by March 1. For students beginning without college credits, the expected pace is generally 30 credits per year; the state also expects an on-time plan of two years for an associate degree or four for a bachelor’s. In July 2026, a Magic Valley student said they had exhausted renewals and were looking for local funds: that post is not a rule, but it illustrates the four-year cap. Check the leave-of-absence policy before dropping credits, stopping for a term or transferring. State scholarship manager Joy Miller can be reached at 208-332-1595 and jmiller@edu.idaho.gov.
