In Aikawa, the visit works as a sequence from extraction to processing. Start in Sado Kinzan’s tunnels, where mining from different eras is visible underground; continue to Kitazawa to read the machinery and industrial landscape above ground. These are not two versions of the same attraction: one is entered, the other is viewed outdoors, and together they tell different stages of mining work.
Sado Gold Mine joined the World Heritage List in 2024 for its unmechanised Edo-period mining methods and production organisation. In 2026, the World Heritage Committee asked Japan to clarify how the site presents all periods of exploitation comprehensively. That review matters: the mining story includes industrial change and debates over labour memory, including wartime workers from the Korean peninsula. A careful route does not reduce the island to photogenic ruins or to a single period.
A full day can begin with both tunnel courses, which take roughly one to one and a half hours, then continue to Kitazawa, Aikawa History Museum or the former Commissioner’s Office. The mine publishes seasonal hours and prices: in October, last entry is 4 pm; from November through March it moves to 3:30 pm. The tunnels stay near 10°C and some stairs limit wheelchair access, so allow time and bring a light jacket.
Transport is part of the itinerary. From Niigata, the conventional ferry takes about two and a half hours to Ryotsu, while the jetfoil takes around 67 minutes; from the port to Aikawa is about 50 minutes by car. Buses run but are limited and do not accept IC cards according to Sado’s visitor guide. Kitazawa is a two-minute walk from Aikawa Hakubutsukanmae. Check ferry times, bus connections and conservation notices before setting your return.
