Maskay guide

Where can you try farinata and savoury pies in Genoa’s old town: Antica Sciamadda or Sciamadda on Via Ravecca?

Two sciamadde serve farinata and Ligurian savoury pies in the caruggi. Compare the walk from the port, counter service and each shop’s specialities.

In Genoa, sciamadde turn the caruggi into a food trail: small ovens and counters where you can order farinata, vegetable pies and a few fried snacks by the portion. Antica Sciamadda is on Via San Giorgio, close to the old port; Sciamadda on Via Ravecca sits on the climb towards Sarzano. These are not trattorias with full table service and long meals, but informal stops for Ligurian flavours as you walk through the medieval centre.

The first is known for wood-fired farinata and savoury pies; a local guide estimates €10–€15 for a quick lunch. The second adds counter dishes such as chard, onion and rice pies, fried panissette and fried sweet milk; the same guide estimates €7–€12 for a quick meal. These are indicative spending estimates from a local directory, not fixed prices from the businesses. At either stop, ask what has just come out of the oven: a freshly baked portion is part of the experience and helps you decide whether a snack is enough or whether to combine several items for lunch.

Visitor comments praise the farinata, hot pies and friendly service. At the Ravecca shop, views on some recipes differ and some reviewers warn that hours may vary; Antica Sciamadda is described as a small space, better suited to takeaway or eating while standing. The choice may depend more on your walk than the menu: San Giorgio fits easily between the Aquarium and Piazza San Lorenzo, while Ravecca is uphill, near Sarzano–Sant’Agostino metro station and Piazza Sarzano.

If you are visiting the port and Aquarium, start at Via San Giorgio 14r and follow the Molo lanes towards the cathedral. If your route passes through Sarzano or the Sant’Agostino Museum, climb to Via di Ravecca 19r. The local guide checked lists both as open Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays, but comments about Ravecca suggest checking before making the detour. Use AMT’s journey planner and expect cobbled lanes, slopes and steps. A two-stop tasting, with a portion of farinata in each neighbourhood, lets you compare the tradition without turning lunch into a long break.
