Where can I plan a special French dinner in Philadelphia: Rittenhouse or Old City?

Parc connects French classics with Rittenhouse Square; Forsythia gives Old City a contemporary bistro and a shared duck dinner.

A French dinner in Philadelphia can begin with the city itself. At Parc, Rittenhouse Square remains in view of a brasserie organized around familiar dishes and the rhythm of a café. At Forsythia, in Old City, Christopher Kearse uses French bistro forms to build a more contemporary menu. Both offer a useful answer to the search for a special dinner, but the evening takes a different shape depending on whether the table wants the reassurance of classics or the interest of a chef’s changing combinations.

Parc’s setting gives the meal an immediate place in Philadelphia. The sidewalk tables face the square, and the restaurant’s menu allows an outing to move naturally from the neighborhood into dinner. Onion soup gratinée, steak frites, trout amandine and moules frites establish a recognizable French vocabulary. That familiarity helps when two people are still discovering each other’s tastes: one can choose fish and lemon brown butter while the other follows the more substantial route through beef bourguignon. The range leaves room for individual appetites without asking the table to commit to a tasting sequence.

The French character also extends to a smaller order. Escargots, charcuterie or a selection of cheese can shape the beginning of the meal, while the wine list provides routes through Champagne and several French regions. Parc is particularly useful when the attraction includes the park and the urban setting. A first date or a meal with visiting friends can have a clear culinary identity while remaining connected to the ordinary pleasures of the neighborhood. The menu’s accessibility is part of that appeal, even when the dinner becomes a more elaborate occasion.

Forsythia offers another kind of French evening. Kearse’s open kitchen works within a modern dining room, and the menu draws on seasonal ingredients and combinations that move beyond standard bistro preparations. Corn beignets with smoked mozzarella and a pistachio-honey dip provide one example; a mushroom vol-au-vent retains a classical form while changing the ingredients around it. Sauces such as bordelaise and Chartreuse beurre blanc give the larger plates a recognizable French structure. The result suits diners interested in the way a chef interprets the cuisine.

The dry-aged duck for two can make the shared meal the center of an Old City outing. The restaurant accepts advance arrangements for the duck, giving diners a way to plan around that particular preparation. A chef’s tasting option requires the whole table to participate, which matters if one person wants to order independently. À la carte dining keeps that flexibility. Forsythia’s bar and wine program also give the evening a route through cocktails and a broader range of wines, rather than tying every choice to the main course.

For a French meal with familiar dishes and a strong relationship to Rittenhouse Square, Parc is the clearer choice. For an evening centered on contemporary cooking in Old City, Forsythia offers the more specific chef-led proposition. Neither decision needs to begin with a claim about the single best restaurant in Philadelphia. The useful question is what the table wants to recognize, what it wants to discover, and how much of the dinner it would like to choose for itself.
