Where can you get free job-search help in North Omaha, and how can you follow up on a complaint?

The Ames American Job Center offers free resources, but one-to-one support has residency requirements. Here is what to know before you visit and how to report a service problem.

People looking for work in North Omaha do not always need another list of vacancies. Sometimes they need a computer, help rebuilding a résumé or someone to turn a scattered search into a plan. The American Job Center operated by Heartland Workforce Solutions (HWS) brings those resources together at 5752 Ames Ave. The Nebraska Department of Labor lists its hours as Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and gives the phone number 402-444-4700. HWS says its services and training are free, so you should not have to pay for an appointment or for a promise of employment. Heartland Workforce Solutions — Ames Avenue American Job Center offers computers and printers, workshops and access to Nebraska’s NEworks job-search system.

The practical distinction is between open resources and one-to-one help. With a NEworks account, anyone can use the basic services HWS describes, such as computers, workshops and assistance with unemployment applications. Personal coaching, interview practice, résumé customisation and an employment plan require enrolment in a programme; that specialised support is for residents of Douglas, Sarpy or Washington County and may require identification or other documents. Before travelling, call and explain what you need, where you live and whether you only need a computer or want to speak with an adviser. This helps you distinguish general services from a training place subject to eligibility or available funding.

Check the location before setting out: since 28 September 2026, HWS has temporarily moved services from its 24th Street site. The Ames office remains open; a partner service is also available at Goodwill Omaha, 3505 L St, but its published hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The state website still lists Ames as an American Job Center, while HWS posts relocation notices, so check its page on the day of your visit. If you need in-person help from the Department of Labor, ask specifically whether it is available at the location you plan to visit.

Accountability matters as much as the address. Comments reproduced by a directory from Google and dated between 2023 and 2024 describe unanswered calls, disorganisation and computers being shut before the advertised closing time. They are individual, older accounts: they are a reason to ask about follow-up and keep a record, but they do not establish that the centre still operates that way. HWS offers job-seeker surveys in English and Spanish, as well as a general complaint form. If no one responds, note dates, names, the service requested and any commitment, then use that channel. For a rights or discrimination issue in a federally funded programme, also ask for the relevant equal-opportunity officer.

Finally, verify any job offer that arrives through social media, text or email separately from the public service. The Federal Trade Commission warns that asking for money to get a job is a scam signal; it also cautions about cheques supposedly intended for equipment that require you to send money back. Look up the employer on its own website, confirm the vacancy there and do not send bank details before verifying the hire. A job centre can help you prepare an application; it cannot promise that a company will hire you.

To begin your online search, create an account with NEworks. HWS’s Ames site is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; call 402-444-4700 or email onestop@hws-ne.org to confirm whether you need an appointment or personalised service. The official HWS contact page links to job-seeker satisfaction forms in English and Spanish and a general complaint form.
