Florida FSAG Public: how to apply for the state need-based college grant

Public FSAG is administered by state universities and Florida College System colleges. We explain six credits, FAFSA/Pell, minimum unmet need, the 2026–27 SAI, and what to ask campus staff.

The Florida Public Student Assistance Grant (FSAG Public) may help with college costs for students with financial need pursuing a degree at a state university or Florida College System college. It is one of several categories sharing the FSAG name; this guide covers the public track only. It is not managed like a central Bright Futures scholarship: the state distributes funds, while participating campuses administer the grant and notify students of awards.

Florida’s 2026 statute requires degree-seeking study, acceptance at an authorised public institution, at least six semester credits or the equivalent each term, and compliance with the state’s general student-aid rules. Applicants must also apply for Pell Grant and show at least $200 of unmet need. That minimum is not a guaranteed award: the actual amount depends on the financial calculation, legislative maximum, and campus funds.

For 2026–27, the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) told campuses that the calculated maximum SAI for FSAG Public, Private, and Postsecondary would be 9,984 under the rule tied to maximum Pell eligibility. This is an eligibility parameter for the year and could change if Pell changes; it does not mean a student receives $9,984 or that everyone below the threshold gets a grant. Need, enrollment, program, state budget, and institutional review still matter.

Start by submitting the 2026–27 FAFSA and applying to an eligible campus. After filing FAFSA, contact the financial-aid office to ask whether FSAG appears in your file, what campus priority date applies, and which documents are missing. State law does not establish a separate statewide FSAG Public form as a general requirement; do not complete forms for another FSAG category until the campus confirms which one applies.

Ask how the six-credit load is measured because the institution determines eligibility at the end of regular registration, including the drop-add period. If you take fewer courses, change campuses, or receive other state aid, the award may change or be unavailable. Request a written explanation of the amount, covered term, renewal conditions, and whether FAFSA must be filed again each year.

FSAG Public may cover only part of a student’s costs; it is need-based aid, not a promise of free tuition. Compare the aid letter with tuition and fees, transport, and housing bills. If the campus does not award the grant, ask for the specific reason: credit load, missing FAFSA/Pell, insufficient need, nonparticipating campus, internal deadline, and lack of funding are different issues with different next steps.

OSFA’s portal brings together grants, forms, and state contacts; Section 1009.50 lets readers verify FSAG Public requirements. OSFA lists 888-827-2004 and osfa@fldoe.org, but the institution decides each file. Keep your FAFSA Submission Summary, aid offer, and campus communications if you need to correct information or appeal a decision.

Bottom line

FSAG Public begins with FAFSA and is administered by the campus; six credits and unmet need are legal conditions, not an award guarantee.
