Federal Work-Study: how to get a student job and when you are paid

It is not a tuition scholarship: FAFSA, campus funding, and hiring determine whether you get a part-time job and how much you can earn.

Federal Work-Study can help with education expenses, but it does not work like a scholarship that discounts tuition or deposits a lump sum at the start of a term. It is part-time employment partly funded by the federal government and administered by participating colleges. A student must file the FAFSA, receive an offer from the school, and usually compete for a job. Read the program profile to understand what it may cover and how pay works.

The FAFSA is the first step, but indicating interest in Work-Study does not guarantee an allocation. The financial-aid office considers financial need and available funds; jobs and funding are limited, so applying early can help. An aid offer may show a maximum earnings amount for the year. That figure is not a check or guaranteed income: you must find a position, be hired, and work authorized hours.

After receiving an offer, ask whether the college requires you to accept the allocation in its portal and apply through a separate job board. Some institutions connect students with departments; others require applications and interviews. Jobs may be available in libraries, labs, offices, tutoring, or community organizations, but openings vary by school. Ask about eligibility, schedule, pay, supervisor, training, and the deadline for using the funds.

Work-Study is paid as wages for hours worked through regular payroll, not as a tuition grant automatically credited to your account. The school sets an hours limit, and the employer should schedule around classes. Federal Student Aid says students must maintain satisfactory academic progress. Before accepting, estimate pay using a realistic schedule: a limited number of hours may not cover the expense you had in mind.

When comparing aid offers, separate Work-Study from grants and scholarships that directly reduce your bill. Ask whether the school lets you apply wages to billed costs and what happens if your allocation runs out. Keep a copy of the offer and track your hours and pay stubs. If you do not receive Work-Study, ask about regular student employment and institutional grants. The key is to treat Work-Study as a job opportunity that can supplement other aid, not a promise of free tuition.
