Federal Pell Grant 2026–27: eligibility, award amount, and how to apply

The Pell maximum is $7,395 for 2026–27, but SAI, enrollment, and new federal rules affect eligibility and award amounts.

For the 2026–27 award year, the Pell Grant has a published maximum of $7,395; that is an annual ceiling, not the amount every student receives. Federal Student Aid calculates aid using the Student Aid Index (SAI), the institution’s cost of attendance, enrollment intensity, and the period attended. FAFSA may show an estimate, but the college issues the final offer after reviewing the student’s file.

Apply each year through FAFSA on StudentAid.gov. Use 2026–27 for attendance from July 2026 through June 2027, or 2027–28 for the following year; the latter is now open. List the schools you are considering, confirm processing, and review your FAFSA Submission Summary. Correct errors or verification requests through the secure portal. FAFSA is free: do not pay an intermediary to complete a form the Department of Education provides at no charge.

Changes that took effect for 2026–27 make it especially important to review the calculation. The federal handbook sets a general Pell SAI ceiling of $14,790 for that year—twice the annual maximum—with a statutory exception for certain dependents of deceased service members or public-safety officers. The foreign-earned-income exclusion is also added to adjusted gross income when determining Max or Min Pell. Another provision, effective July 1, 2026, makes a student ineligible when nonfederal aid equals or exceeds the total cost of attendance. If you have outside scholarships, tuition aid, or foreign income, ask financial aid to explain how these provisions affect your package.

Usual eligibility is aimed at undergraduates who have not earned a bachelor’s or first professional degree, although limited exceptions exist, including the expansion of Workforce Pell for eligible programs. Confirm that both the institution and program participate in federal aid. Pell use is generally limited to 600%—the equivalent of six full-time years; check your Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used before extending your studies. A credit-load reduction or withdrawal may change the school’s disbursement and can sometimes create a repayment obligation.

Build a budget by separating tuition, fees, housing, and books, and do not confuse a preliminary estimate with approved money. Use the Federal Student Aid Estimator to model options, ask when the school will issue its award letter, and request a breakdown if the result differs from expectations. Pell generally does not need to be repaid, but an early withdrawal, eligibility correction, or other circumstance may change the disbursement. Plan around the campus’s final offer, not the advertised maximum.

Bottom line

Pell can reduce college costs, but the 2026–27 maximum does not guarantee an individual award. File the correct FAFSA, review the new rules with your campus, and confirm the final offer before committing to expenses.
