Detroit Promise may provide a last-dollar path to college or technical training for graduates of high schools located in Detroit. It is not a statewide Michigan grant and does not guarantee a fixed award before other aid is reviewed. The Detroit Promise profile identifies the organization coordinating the initiative and where application updates appear.
For the class of 2026, the program separates community college from four-year university funding. The two-year route requires Detroit residency during junior and senior years, attendance and graduation from a Detroit-address high school during those years, the 2026–27 FAFSA, and completion of the college’s financial-aid requirements; no GPA or exam score is required for that route. University funding may require four years of Detroit residency and high-school attendance, plus GPA or admissions criteria that vary by campus. Review each partner’s rules before assuming “tuition-free” means every cost is paid.
Application status matters right now: the program says the class of 2026 application closed July 1, 2026, and is expected to reopen in November. The published verification deadline for this cohort was June 1. For students who never began an application, the four-year verification window had passed; the website retained a contact option for some community-college applicants to ask whether they can still proceed. The class of 2027 needs its own official dates and terms.
Students who already applied should check the portal and complete scholarship acceptance, authorization to release records, transcript, and FAFSA documentation. College admission and scholarship verification are related but separate processes: a place at a partner institution does not mean funding has been finalized. Applicants who attended multiple high schools should review cohort rules, since the program’s eligibility page requires the relevant schools to be located in Detroit.
Before choosing a college, ask financial aid for an estimate separating tuition, required fees, books, and living costs. Find out what Detroit Promise covers after Pell, Michigan TIP, and institutional awards; what happens if you change schools; and whether support can move from a community college to a university partner. The organization says applications reopen in November 2026, but a future deadline should not be guessed, and 2026 eligibility should not automatically be carried into 2027.
