Detroit Promise 2026–27: remaining aid and how to prepare for the next application

Detroit Promise’s 2026 application is closed, but the site says it will reopen in November and still lists next steps for some graduates. This guide explains the scholarship, the separate community-college and university routes, and what to prepare.

Detroit Promise is the last piece of a financial-aid package: the student applies for federal and state aid, the college calculates the eligible balance, and the local programme may cover remaining tuition and mandatory fees. It does not automatically pay housing, food, or every cost of attendance. The scholarship serves Detroit students, and conditions differ between the community-college and four-year routes.

As of October 12, 2026, the class-of-2026 application had been closed since July 1. Detroit Promise says it will reopen in November 2026, but families should not carry the previous cohort’s dates and rules over to the class of 2027. The site offers a contact path for eligible 2026 graduates who did not apply and still plan to attend a community college; four-year verification has passed.

The class-of-2026 community-college route requires living in Detroit during junior and senior years, attending a Detroit high school for those two years, and graduating there. It has no GPA or exam requirement; support may last up to three years, and programmes must be Pell-eligible at partner colleges. The university route requires four years of Detroit residency and high-school attendance, admission to a partner, and GPA/test requirements that vary by institution. Do not treat one college’s rules as universal.

For a family’s budget, start with FAFSA and the college’s aid package. Detroit Promise is last-dollar aid: Pell, Michigan TIP, and other scholarships reduce the bill first. Ask financial aid which tuition and mandatory fees remain, which charges are excluded, and how outside scholarships affect the calculation. The programme says the institution performs a final review; a verbal estimate is not a formal award.

Earlier graduates can check Path Back, described for Detroit graduates from 2013 through 2025 who never used the scholarship or paused college and want to start or return to a community college. Confirm which graduation years and application periods are currently accepted. Path Back is not an automatic scholarship extension for every adult and does not itself cover a four-year degree.

Detroit Promise Path adds coaching for community-college students; at selected campuses, the page describes coaches, connections to services, and a $50 monthly stipend subject to requirements. Choosing not to participate in coaching does not itself cancel the scholarship. The Detroit Promise profile explains the balance, requirements, and cohort closure; the Path profile details coaching and stipend conditions. Before enrolling, request a written estimate after Pell/TIP and ask whether your certificate is Pell-eligible.

Information checked on October 12, 2026 against official sources. Eligibility and dates change by graduating class; do not treat one academic year’s calendar as permanent. Confirm eligibility and the amount your institution authorizes before committing to expenses.

Bottom line

Detroit Promise may close a tuition gap, but only after other aid is applied and the college confirms eligibility. The 2026 cohort is closed and the next reopening was announced for November, so prepare documents without assuming future rules will be identical.
