Danbury and nearby towns have community scholarships with their own heritage, residency, or school requirements. Two examples are the Latino Scholarship Fund and the Sons of Portugal Scholarship Fund at the Portuguese Cultural Center. They are not Connecticut state aid or one shared award pool, and their 2026 deadlines have passed. The Latino fund profile explains its eligible towns and documents; the Sons of Portugal profile separates what the public page confirms from details students still need to ask about.
The Latino Scholarship Fund serves high-school seniors who live in and attend school in an eligible town. Its list includes Danbury and other Fairfield County communities, plus New Milford. For 2026 it offered eight awards of $3,000–$5,000, required at least a 3.0 GPA, a plan to enroll at a U.S. college or university, and U.S. citizenship, permanent residency, or approved DACA status. Its heritage definition requires at least one parent or grandparent born in a recognized Spanish-speaking Latin American country, including Puerto Rico. Read the full wording before deciding that you qualify.
The prior application asked for a transcript, relevant household Form 1040s, two non-family recommendations, and a one- to two-page essay about personal history and future contributions to the Latino community. The fund says the 2027 application will open in February and anticipates a late-March deadline, but has not posted a final date. Last year’s rules can help you prepare questions and records; they do not replace the new application. The organization says incomplete or late applications are not accepted and mailed materials will not be considered.
Sons of Portugal has a different entry point: the center says it recognizes academic achievement among students of Portuguese descent, including high-school seniors and college students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in an approved program. Its public page still shows 2026 forms and an April 18 deadline. It does not list the amount, minimum GPA, or every eligible town there. Ask the center for 2027 requirements; do not attribute the Latino fund’s award range to it or describe the separate Navigator Award as tuition aid.
Before spending hours on forms, verify three things: the Latino fund’s town and school rules, each program’s ancestry definition, and the graduation year or college level accepted. Build a calendar for applications, recommendations, and transcripts, and keep copies of every file. For 2027, the Latino Scholarship Fund lists apply@latinoscholarshipfund.com and 203-244-7589; the Portuguese Cultural Center lists scholarship@portugueseculturalcenter.com and 203-748-1278. Use those official pages to confirm new dates and requirements.
