CUNY ASAP in New York: eligibility and college costs it can cover

CUNY ASAP combines advising, transit, and tuition support for eligible students; financial coverage depends on Pell, TAP, and the campus.

CUNY ASAP can be a practical route to lower costs and receive ongoing guidance, but it is not an automatic scholarship for every student in New York. CUNY ASAP and ACE operates at 16 public colleges and combines advising, tutoring, priority registration, textbook help, and transit support; tuition-gap coverage has separate financial conditions.

For 2026–27, CUNY’s general guide asks applicants to be current or newly accepted students at a participating college, live in New York City or State and qualify for in-state tuition, complete FAFSA and TAP each year, generally carry 12 credits per term, and maintain satisfactory academic progress. Additional conditions vary by pathway and college. Join ASAP lets students confirm which campuses and majors participate before completing an application.

The tuition-and-fee gap award is not guaranteed by joining the program: the financial-aid guide requires at least $1 in Pell Grant or TAP, a remaining tuition balance after other aid, and no outstanding federal verification items. Students without financial aid may still receive tutoring, advising, textbook help, or transit support if they meet pathway rules; what they do not receive is the gap award. It is not a loan, and CUNY says eligible gap awards do not need to be repaid.

The application proceeds in steps: apply to a participating college, check eligible majors, file FAFSA and TAP—or an applicable state alternative—accept grants offered, and follow the campus recruiter’s instructions. CUNY says placement is limited and does not publish one deadline for all 16 colleges. Contact the ASAP team at your campus before choosing a course load or accepting an aid package.

Before enrolling, compare the full package, not just the award: tuition, fees, books, transit costs, and the time needed for advising or tutoring. Ask how many prior credits your associate or bachelor’s pathway accepts, which majors participate this year, and what services remain if you do not qualify financially. CUNY ASAP can support academic progress and lower specific costs, but each benefit should be confirmed with the campus handling your file.
