In California, paying for college does not depend on finding one foundation. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) administers state aid that may be combined with federal and campus funding. Two familiar names are Cal Grant and the Middle Class Scholarship; both help with college costs, but their eligibility, participating institutions and award calculations differ. The first decision is whether to use the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application (CADAA), followed by checking that the high school submitted the student’s GPA.
Cal Grant includes A, B and C tracks: some are tied to tuition, while others help with living costs or career training. For the 2026–27 cycle, the state priority date was March 2, 2026; students attending a California Community College had an extension through September 2. Both dates have passed. CSAC had not yet posted an official 2027–28 deadline on the page reviewed, so prepare records and check the calendar when it is announced. After applying, confirm that the agency received your GPA and review WebGrants 4 Students.
The Middle Class Scholarship calculates tuition aid after other financial assistance is considered, and its awards can vary with the state budget and institution. It serves eligible students at UC, CSU and certain community-college bachelor’s programs. It is not a fixed amount and does not automatically cover every living expense. FAFSA and CADAA are different applications: CSAC explains CADAA for students who cannot use the federal form and meet state conditions. Do not send tax or immigration information through unofficial channels.
To move forward, talk with your school counselor and the financial-aid office at the campus you are considering: ask whether your GPA was reported, which account you need and how the scholarship coordinates with other grants. The commission offers WebGrants for tracking and Student Support at (888) 224-7268. Since deadlines can change by cycle, use CSAC and Cash for College to find free application help, and verify the date rather than assuming a calendar from a previous year still applies.
Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
