Where to enjoy brunch in St. Louis’s Central West End: four tables for a lingering morning

A garden-center café, a French bistro, a gastropub and a historic hotel dining room offer four different approaches to brunch in the Central West End.

Brunch in the Central West End does not come in one setting. The same morning can begin among plants, unfold beneath a pressed-tin ceiling in a French bistro or turn into a long gathering at a contemporary pub. On Forest Park’s eastern edge, amid turn-of-the-century homes, the district built its identity around Euclid Avenue; cafés and restaurants now give those streets new rhythms. The useful question is not which place has the longest menu, but what kind of morning the visitor wants.

Bowood by Niche is the most visually distinctive choice: the restaurant occupies Bowood Farms, bringing daylight and greenery into the dining room. Its seasonal menu moves among cacio e pepe eggs, crab cake Benedict, cheddar waffles, French toast and salads. The setting explains much of its appeal, but the cooking is reason to reserve as well: familiar brunch dishes get contemporary touches, and the menu changes with ingredients. This is a full meal, closer to a brunch destination than a quick coffee stop.

Brasserie by Niche follows a different tradition. Its checkered tables, patio and wine service preserve a French bistro character; on Sundays, the menu brings beignets, quiche, eggs en cocotte, croque madame and avocado tartine. The result is lively, recognizable and broad enough for a shared table. At Retreat Gastropub, Sunday brunch brings a pub-style contrast: made-from-scratch cooking, shareable plates, burgers and seasonal cocktails suit a more relaxed pub-style meal.

The Preston, inside the Chase Park Plaza, brings the full-service setting of a historic hotel. Its weekend breakfast menu includes eggs Benedict, an egg, ham and Gruyère croissant, a short-rib skillet and lighter choices, alongside mimosas, Bellinis and Irish coffee. Its Maps rating is less uniform than the other three, so choose it for location, atmosphere and menu range rather than an expectation of unanimous praise. Together, these rooms explain why brunch here is best planned around the table: garden light at Bowood, a French bistro at Brasserie, a pub and cocktails at Retreat or a hotel breakfast at The Preston.
