Which Boston weekend markets offer food, crafts, and local goods?

SoWa Open Market brings together farmers, artists, and prepared food on Sundays; Haymarket occupies Blackstone and Hanover Streets on Fridays and Saturdays with fresh goods, food businesses, and nearby ethnic groceries. This guide compares their schedules, offerings, and services.

Boston weekend markets: SoWa Open Market and Haymarket

In Boston, “market” can describe two outdoor mornings with different purposes. SoWa Open Market takes place on Sundays during a defined season, combining crafts, artists, farm stalls, and prepared food. Haymarket occupies Blackstone and Hanover Streets on Fridays and Saturdays, where pushcart vendors sell fruit, vegetables, and other fresh foods. Both are downtown and within walking distance of one another, but planning starts with the day of the week and the goods you want to find.

SoWa: a Sunday outing with changing vendors

The organizer locates SoWa Open Market at 500 Harrison Avenue and Thayer Street in the South of Washington district. For 2026 it lists Sundays from May 3 through November 15, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission. The fair brings together regional vendors, farmers and producers, artists, designers, and food trucks; its seasonal list includes specialty foods, baked goods, clothing, jewelry, homewares, and artists’ work. Some stalls may draw on international cuisines, but their presence depends on each date’s lineup.

The current official list includes Native Colombian Food, Samosa Man, The Fat Cactus, and Q’s Nuts, among others. That is concrete evidence of culinary variety, not a promise that every vendor will attend every Sunday: the directory changes, and the organizer says sellers may join throughout the season. Live music and activities listed on the calendar add to the food. If you are traveling for a particular dish, product, or artist, check both the vendor list and event notices before setting out.

The organizer’s FAQ says the market generally runs in the rain unless extreme weather prompts a closure notice, and that covered seating and restrooms are available in nearby buildings. It also lists Back Bay, Tufts Medical Center, and Broadway MBTA stations as walkable options. Drivers can use paid lots on nearby streets; the venue says Sunday metered street parking is free. Because the fair occupies a pedestrian corridor, comfortable shoes and a reusable bag are more useful than planning a quick stop.

Haymarket: fresh goods on Friday and Saturday

Haymarket follows a different model. The vendors’ association places it on Blackstone Street between Hanover and North Streets and lists activity every Friday from 3 a.m. and Saturday from 4 a.m. until close each day. It is not a farmers market that guarantees every item was grown in Massachusetts; it is a street market where vendors sell fresh food and goods that may change with the day and available supply. The district has a centuries-long produce-trading tradition, although today’s stock depends on sellers and current sourcing.

Fruit and vegetables are central, alongside fish and other foods. The association also describes more than forty independent vendors, ethnic groceries, restaurants, and historic pubs in the surrounding area. Its official vendor page introduces merchants connected with India, Syria, Mexico, and Cambodia, among others; this helps explain the market’s human and commercial diversity, although it does not mean that every listed person sells prepared food or that every stall is open at once. Shopping is direct: walk the street, compare the goods, and ask each vendor what is available that day. Haymarket does not publish a permanent inventory; photos and reviews are examples, not a guarantee of stock. Carrying cash is sensible because payment methods depend on the seller.

The association lists parking validation at Parcel 7 Garage: one dollar for two hours and three dollars for three hours, subject to garage terms. Haymarket is beside Haymarket Station and a short walk from Boston Public Market and the North End; subway lines and buses make a car-free visit possible. Public comments tied to the location discuss prices, volume, and the range of fruit and vegetables, and describe an active street that can get congested. Arriving early leaves more time to choose before the day ends and makes it easier to finish the shopping in one trip.

Choosing between the two

For Friday or Saturday in Boston, Haymarket works for a morning fresh-food shop; on Sunday, SoWa offers a longer fair combining food, art, and vendors’ handmade goods. Their strengths should not be confused: SoWa is about programming and creative stalls, while Haymarket is about street-food retail. Since they do not share a weekly opening day, plan around whichever market is operating during your stay and confirm vendors and individual business hours through official channels.

Bottom line

SoWa suits a seasonal Sunday stroll among art, crafts, and prepared food; Haymarket is a Friday or Saturday street-market shopping trip focused on fresh goods and pushcart vendors. Check SoWa’s calendar and Haymarket’s Blackstone Street information: sellers, merchandise, and availability can vary.
