Maskay guide

Where can you try Belgian beer after visiting Leuven University Library?

Domus serves its own beer with Flemish food; MALZ brings together craft producers for a broader tasting a few streets from the centre.

Leuven University Library reminds visitors that this is a city of study, but its streets also tell a beer story. After the visit, walk towards the centre and choose between two very different pauses: beer made by one local producer or a bar gathering many breweries. Oude Markt, called Europe's 'longest bar' by the tourist office because of its dense line of cafés, is a useful landmark. It does not mean you must sit down at the first counter you pass.

Domus Leuven on Tiensestraat is the house-brewery option. According to the restaurant, a copper pipe carries beer to the taps from its small brewery across the street. There are tasting glasses, regular and seasonal beers, and Belgian and Flemish dishes; the business describes a stew made with Nostra Domus beer. If you want to tour the brewery, check that activity separately: ordering a beer in the brasserie does not book a guided visit.

MALZ on Brusselsestraat takes the opposite approach. Its changing selection brings together Belgian and international labels on tap, in bottles and in cans. The tourist office recommends it as a craft-beer bar, and it also operates a shop. Customers appreciate the range and guidance, although such a broad list rewards time and questions. There are simple accompaniments but no promise of a full meal. MALZ opens in the afternoon and closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, a decisive difference if your library visit is in the morning.

At either stop, a thoughtful tasting means trying fewer styles and understanding them better, especially because Belgian beers vary widely in strength. Domus pairs the glass with a proper meal; MALZ invites comparison between producers. Both routes can be walked from the university area and end at Oude Markt. Choose according to whether hunger calls for cooking or your main aim is time with Leuven's beer culture.

Bottom line

Choose Domus to pair house-brewed beer with a Flemish meal. Choose MALZ to compare craft styles, provided you can start your visit in the afternoon.
