Alabama Student Assistance Program: FAFSA, eligibility and remaining costs

ASAP is $300–$5,000 in annual need-based aid for Alabama residents at participating campuses. Learn how to start with FAFSA and what to confirm.

The Alabama Student Assistance Program, or ASAP, is a state need-based grant for Alabama residents pursuing their first undergraduate degree at a participating institution. ACHE’s current page lists awards of $300 to $5,000 per academic year. The final amount is not fixed and is not determined by household income alone: the college uses FAFSA to review the file, need and available funds. The grant goes to the institution, which decides how to credit the student’s account.

The route is FAFSA each year and the correct campus. List the college on FAFSA, provide requested verification documents and ask its financial-aid office whether it participates in ASAP, what its priority date is and when it reviews awards. ACHE’s program page does not show one statewide deadline; institutions compare files and available funds. Ask whether minimum half-time enrollment applies, whether you must accept other grants first, what progress rules apply and whether a late file can still enter an award cycle.

It also helps to identify the program by its full name. The Alabama Student Grant Program is separate: it is not need-based and is limited to eleven independent colleges listed by ACHE, with a separate 2026–27 application. ASAP serves nearly 80 eligible campuses; participation can change, so confirm it before budgeting around aid. A public community-college student should not send the Alabama Student Grant form if the school is not on the private-college list, and a private-campus student should ask which of the two programs applies.

The published range is broad because the award depends on need and funds. Ask the college to separate ASAP from Pell, campus scholarships, loans and work-study in the award letter. Compare the package with tuition, required fees, books, transportation, housing and meals; do not assume the grant pays costs outside the college account. Before dropping credits or transferring, ask how the change affects eligibility and who needs to be notified. Keep copies of FAFSA, verification and the award letter, and note the due date for any remaining balance.

In a July 2026 Birmingham discussion about paying for college, students and families described different paths: some mentioned Pell and community college, others transfer, debt or aid packages that still left costs. They were not discussing ASAP and cannot guarantee an award. Their comments do explain why students should first identify gift aid and compare a two-year route with transfer. ACHE lists Takena Jones as Grants and Scholarships Associate at 334-353-9151 and takena.jones@ache.edu; the campus aid office determines each student’s eligibility and available amount.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
