This alliance between INFOCORROSION and SSPC (The Society for Protective Coatings of USA) marks a milestone in the development and modernization of the TECHNOLOGY of Surface Treatment and Corrosion Control with Protective Coatings for all Spanish-speaking countries (South America, Central America and Spain).

Who should provide the service of expert testimony and failure analysis?

Although it is true that this will establish some guidelines that allow to resolve possible conflicts that arise around the presence of premature failures, based on our experience and the state of development of the art in anti-corrosion protection in our country, we recommend the hiring of an independent third-party engineering company to the parties in conflict and specialized in expert testimony and failure analysis of recognized prestige and case experience, that allows to carry out systematic research aimed at determining the causes and responsibilities of coating failures, loss of its functions and/or corrosion or deterioration of the metallic substrate, in the case that it exists.

Experience and conflict resolution

I must confess that over the course of more than 30 years of work in the field of Corrosion Control Engineering, Surface Treatment and Protective Coatings, the consultancy service of a THIRD PARTY for the IDENTIFICATION, FAILURE ANALYSIS and RESOLUTION OF CONFLICTS, is the one I have been carrying out most frequently, both inside and outside my country. While I write this article, I have two failure expert reports pending, one related to the exposure of materials in corrosive marine atmospheres C5 (ISO 12944), and the other case, the corrosion of steel panels in contact with the ground, both in new construction projects.

Training of specialists in expert testimony and failure analysis

As I always mention in the courses (Specification, Inspection and Quality Assurance, Expert Testimony and Failure Analysis) of the SPECIALIZATION IN PROTECTIVE COATINGS that I have been teaching for more than 7 years in Spanish-speaking countries, I need to anchor the following concept, given the wrong and superficial reports I have seen, prepared by “experts” or “specialists”: “Failure Analysis is a high-level technical specialized task and the professional in charge must have extensive experience that goes hand in hand with a high level of ethical development”.
