History

Jimmy Wilson, first owner, was a Boston town crier for fifty years. Upon retiring, he opened this tavern and named it Bell-in-Hand. Only ale was served, not hard liquor. Over more than 200 years, it has been a gathering place for people of all kinds, including politicians, actors, and lawyers. Even Daniel Webster was a frequent visitor.
