Why visit Chincoteague, Virginia
Chincoteague works best when its two island settings are understood separately. The inhabited town provides accommodation and restaurants; a bridge connects it with Assateague, where the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the recreational beach bring visitors into a protected coastal landscape. Choosing a room in town does not mean staying on the ocean beach.
The ponies associated with Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague belong to this wider island story. Wildlife observation is an opportunity, not a guaranteed encounter. Leave room for walking, looking across the habitat and responding to the conditions that the refuge permits on the day, rather than building the trip around a promised sighting.
Beach access requires particular attention in 2026. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports continuing construction for a relocated recreational beach area. Its current forecast is a possible spring 2027 opening, dependent on the work; the new facilities should not be described as already operating.
The existing recreational beach is intended to remain available during construction, although weather, launches and safety events can cause temporary closures. The agency also identifies construction-related restrictions at D-Dike and possible delays on Beach Road. These distinctions are more useful for planning than a blanket claim that either the entire refuge or the entire beach is closed.

Getting there and continuing the journey
Norfolk and Virginia Beach provide a southern gateway across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Cape Charles and Onancock can form earlier stops on an Eastern Shore route before continuing to Chincoteague.
Approach along US 13, then take Route 175 east to Chincoteague. The turn from the peninsula’s main highway is the key connection; the island and the refuge should be entered through their designated roads, not through a map shortcut to an inaccessible point on Assateague.
Plan the route in two parts: arrival at the town and a separate visit to the refuge and beach. Before making the latter, read the Fish and Wildlife Service’s construction update and current access notices. Allow flexibility for detours and check which beach access is operating rather than navigating to the future relocated facilities.
