Cape Charles faces the Chesapeake Bay from Virginia’s Eastern Shore. That orientation matters when choosing a destination: the town waterfront and nearby Kiptopeke belong to the bay side of the peninsula, rather than the Atlantic beach setting associated with Assateague farther north. Start with the waterfront, then allow the town’s history to give the landscape context.
Cape Charles Museum and Welcome Center preserves that earlier story in a former power plant. Photographs, objects, railway equipment and Chesapeake steamboat models explain the connections between trains, ferries and the town. It is a useful counterpoint to a visit centred entirely on the beach.
Kiptopeke State Park extends the journey beyond the town itself. Woodland trails, coastal habitat and bird migration are central to its appeal. Its concrete ships form a distinctive offshore breakwater. A shore-based visit can include the trails and waterfront without depending on a boat excursion.
For a comfortable stay, distinguish accommodation in Cape Charles from properties elsewhere on the peninsula. The lodging and dining guides below allow that comparison without treating every Eastern Shore address as part of the town. At the September 2026 check, the state park specifically reported that kayak rentals were unavailable; do not plan around an assumed on-site rental service.

Getting there and continuing the journey
Norfolk and Virginia Beach are the main city references south of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Onancock and Chincoteague are possible onward stops along the Eastern Shore, rather than neighbourhoods of Cape Charles.
US 13 is the north–south road along the peninsula. From the Norfolk–Virginia Beach side, it crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which charges a toll. Cape Charles is reached by turning west from US 13 onto Route 184; the town publishes this approach on its location page.
For Kiptopeke, use the park’s separate signed approach from US 13 via Route 704. A practical route combines Cape Charles and the park before continuing north along US 13. Check bridge conditions and the park’s current notices rather than relying on an old itinerary’s prices or rental arrangements.
