Council Grove asks for a wider reading of the American West. The Santa Fe Trail is one part of its story; the history of the Kaw people is another, essential part. The Kaw Mission occupies an 1851 building, while the Kaw Nation’s Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park brings attention to the land and its continuing significance to the community.
At the heritage park, the return of Iⁿ‘zhúje‘waxóbe, the Sacred Red Rock, in 2023 gives the landscape a contemporary meaning as well as a historical one. It should be approached as a place of cultural importance, not simply another roadside landmark. The Kaw Mission and the park provide different perspectives and are best understood together.
Council Grove Lake adds an outdoor dimension, with recreation areas and views of the Flint Hills. The town also sits at the northern end of the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway. That position makes it a natural place to connect a local visit with the grassland country farther south, without reducing either the town or the prairie to a hurried stop.

The federal recreation guide describes an approach from Kansas City via I-70 to Topeka, I-335 southwest and US-56 west to Council Grove. The scenic route begins at US-56 and K-177. Continue south on K-177 toward Strong City, Cottonwood Falls and Cassoday, choosing stops according to your interests. From Wichita, I-35 reaches the Cassoday end of the byway.
