Why visit St. Marys, Georgia
St. Marys gives the Georgia coast an approachable mainland base and a gateway to a much less developed island landscape. Its waterfront, small historic inns and naval museum belong to a town experience of their own. Cumberland Island adds a protected setting reached by boat, with distances and transport rules that need to shape the visit from the beginning.
At the waterfront, St. Marys Submarine Museum interprets the U.S. submarine service through models, documents, photographs, equipment and personal records. A working periscope lets visitors look toward the river. The current museum opens Tuesday–Saturday, ten to five; Sunday and Monday are closed, as are listed special dates. Its fundraising campaign describes a future move without confirming that the collection has already left its current address.
Crooked River State Park brings maritime forest and marshland into the mainland journey. Trails pass through palmettos and oaks with Spanish moss, while the nature center has a separate Wednesday–Sunday schedule. Guided paddling trips are published, but a general kayak-rental service is explicitly unavailable. Plan the actual activity rather than assuming equipment will be waiting.
Cumberland Island National Seashore connects undeveloped beaches with Dungeness ruins and other historic places. The visitor center and passenger ferry departure are at 113 St. Marys Street West. Reserve both boat journeys, arrive sixty minutes before departure and carry food and water. The northern sites are not adjacent to the arrival docks; use maps and the actual booked transport to choose a manageable route.
The current winter ferry timetable omits Tuesday and Wednesday. Specific managed-hunt dates in late 2026 close wilderness and northern areas, including Plum Orchard and its dock, rather than necessarily the whole island. The park’s March 2026 accessibility guidance explains beach chairs and advance trackchair arrangements; visitors with mobility needs should plan these before the boat trip.
Spencer House, Goodbread House and Riverview Hotel offer different room and breakfast arrangements along Osborne Street. Seagles Restaurant, Southern River Walk and the Georgia branch of St. Marys Seafood & More give dining choices with distinct settings and schedules. Let those practical differences support time spent learning the coast, without imposing a fixed trip duration.
